Alto Sax transposition
The Alto Sax is a E♭ instrument: a written C sounds as a concert E♭. This tuner is already set to E♭ transposition, so the display shows the written note from your part, while the cents meter measures the real pitch.
Which note to tune on
Most bands tune to concert B♭3. On the Alto Sax that is a written G4: play it, hold it steady, and adjust until the display turns green.
How to tune your Alto Sax
- Warm up for a minute first — a cold instrument plays flat.
- Click Start Tuning, allow the microphone, and play a long, steady note at a medium volume.
- If the meter leans left (flat), push the tuning slide, barrel, neck or head joint in slightly; if it leans right (sharp), pull it out.
- Check a few other notes across the range — every instrument has notes that naturally lean sharp or flat.
